Pacific Herring - Small Fish, Big Problem
The annual herring spawn in the Strait of Georgia around Hornby and Denman Islands is the last of six major herring spawns on the west coast of Canada - the rest were overfished. Herring are a critical part of the First Nations diet. They have used the fish and their roe sustainably for thousands of years.
Sea Shepherd Calls on Canadian Government to End B.C. Herring Roe Fishery
The remaining 74 Southern Resident Orca and Chinook salmon are endangered and depend on herring for survival. Sea Shepherd Conservation Society's Operation Backbone is calling for a moratorium on the Roe Herring Fishery in British Columbia with Conservancy Hornby Island.
